Astrophytum myriostigma, commonly known as the Bishop's Cap Cactus, Bishop's Hat, or Bishop's Miter Cactus, is a striking spineless cactus prized for its distinctive star-like shape. The name "Astrophytum" translates to "star plant," defined by prominent vertical ribs — typically five — and a surface covered with whitish, felt-like flocking of trichomes that varies between horticultural varieties.

General Information and Care

• Appearance: Globose (rounded) to cylindrical, spineless stem with whitish flocking. Star-shaped in cross-section.
• Native to: The highlands of northeastern and central Mexico.
• Growth: Slow-growing; adds more ribs and becomes more cylindrical with age.
• Flowers: Mature plants produce fragrant, creamy yellow to golden flowers near the apex, typically in spring or summer after about six years of growth.
• Light: Thrives in bright sunlight — 6 to 8 hours of direct sun per day.
• Watering: Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly in summer; keep dry in winter during dormancy. Susceptible to root rot.
• Soil: Use a very gritty, fast-draining, mineral-based mix.
