Operculicarya decaryi — commonly known as the Jabily or Madagascar Elephant Tree — is a highly sought-after, thick-stemmed succulent tree belonging to the cashew family (Anacardiaceae). Native to the arid, southwestern scrublands of Madagascar, it is universally revered by collectors for its natural bonsai-like silhouette, zig-zagging branches, and deeply textured, knobby trunk.
- In winter, mature branches push out tiny, inconspicuous 2mm deep-red flowers.
- Root Architecture: Underneath the surface, the plant develops massive, tuberous, fleshy roots designed to trap moisture. Cultivators frequently raise the base during repotting to showcase these thick, sculptural roots above the soil line.
Care Guide
- Light: Needs very bright, direct sunlight for many hours each day.
- Water: Water deeply when the soil is completely dry. Water less in winter when leaves drop.
- Soil: Use a fast-draining mix for cacti and succulents.
- Temperature: Keep it warm. Does not tolerate frost or cold drafts.
- Pruning: Prune branches in spring to shape as a bonsai.
