General Information and Care
  • Origin: Native to Bolivia, in the Chuquisaca department, where it grows at high altitudes (around 1,800 to 2,400 meters) in rocky, gritty soil.
  • Appearance: This is a small, spineless-looking, clumping cactus that forms dense mounds or clusters of individual heads. The heads are globose to cylindrical with distinctive spiral-like bumps (tubercles).
  • Growth: It is a relatively easy species to cultivate but has a slow growth rate. It is well-known for producing many offsets (pups), which allows it to form large clusters over time.
  • Flowers: Mature plants can produce attractive pink to purplish or magenta-colored flowers from the base or apex of the stems, usually in late spring or summer.
  • Light: It requires abundant, bright light and can tolerate full sun, which helps enhance its vibrant colors.
  • Watering: It is crucial to use well-draining soil and let it dry out completely between waterings to prevent rot. Water moderately during the growing season and keep it dry in the winter when temperatures drop below 10°C (50°F).
